I've submitted my 23andMe test. It will be a few weeks before the results
are back but I've learned quite a bit more. They test more than 900
thousand SNPs, which comes to close to a third of our whole DNA. They also
test SNPs on the Y chromosome, which is different from the STRs that ftdna
tests. The SNPs more reliably tell you what haplogroup you belong to, but
the fast mutating STRs can provide for a more subtle analysis of
relationships. 23andMe also provides testing of the mtDNA and
X-chromosome, the latter I've not looked into yet. It also provides a lot
of medical markers. That can be a concern for some, but I've decided not
for me. (Knowing my personal medical history and family medical history, I
pretty much know what's in store for me!) All of this for $99.
The other thing about the 23andMe is that the results can be transferred
to ftdna for $89--a big plus!
There are only 15 people now listed in the Cooley DNA project who have
done the Family Finder. If you have FF-tested, be sure you have joined the
Cooley Family DNA Project. With that, Greg Parker and I will be able to
look at your results. If you've not tested, I'd recommend 23andMe for $99.
FTDNA, however, is better for the Y test.
Interestingly, I have found that two non-Cooley Cooley descendants
FF-match. One is of the Halifax NC Cooleys (which has been Y tested) and
the other of the Franklin NC Cooleys. Does this mean that the two groups
are one and the same? Not necessarily. Their FF matches could be from
another family. But I have someone of Franklin group half-convinced to Y
test.
So, mysteries are slowing becoming resolved. We may not yet know where our
guy belongs, but we know where he doesn't!
Jim, you've expressed interest in Family Finder. Perhaps it's time to do
it, possible through 23andMe--or wait until my results are returned.
