Yes, in one of two ways. Some people had posted their lineage charts. I
also followed up with email. Four generations back, I can identify all
my ancestors with certainty. In the fifth generation there are only two
unidentified people in my lineage. None of the hits were in these first
five generations, unless it was with the two people for whom I do not
have parents (i.e. Theophilus Neathery and John Tharp). The Neathery
connection showed up with more than one person and this is not a very
common surname.
I previously suspected I was likely a descendant of a VA Neathery couple
that these people could trace back to. It would appear from the DNA that
is true, but I would have to go back a couple more generations to make
that connection. Theophilus Neathery was born 1825, Perry Co., AL
according to his Mexican War Pension. He died 1909 in California. Like
many of my ancestors, he was all over the place. He was born in Alabama,
enlisted from the state of Texas, came to Trinity Co., CA in 1852,
married my ancestress there in 1859, went to Colorado in 1880, was
briefly in Utah then back to California in 1900.
I believe you noted previously that I had a Cooley & Ball hit and I told
you the other person's Cooley was a New England family, but I did share
an early Ball lineage. But the weird thing was that the earliest Ball in
my family was Polly Ball who was the mother of Caroline (Simmons)
Langdon. Polly Ball was born ca 1796, in NY and I can trace her male
Ball lineage back four generations. Polly Ball appears in my fifth
generation. The Ball cousin connection was several generations back from
her.
Another match as I recall seemed to be Scott. Scott doesn't enter into
my lineage until the 6tth generation when Mourning Scott, b. 1783, in
NC, married Matthew Tucker in 1806 in KY. Their daughter Isabell Tucker
m. Lewis Washington Kirtley in 1840 and they moved to MO and then came
to CA.
Now when you go back far enough some of these families may have
intermarried more than once (a case in point my Scott and Riggs
families) and that could have increased the odds I suppose. But none of
my matches were for recent generations.
So, I was rather dumbfounded at how many generations I had to go back to
see how I might be cousins to these people.
