William Cooley, living next door to John Cooley, Randolph County, Mo 1840
After seeing the map done by Cecy Rice from the Randolph County, Mo
Historical Society showing William Cooley living next door to John Cooley, I
have been very curious as I knew this could not be John's son. John is my
GGG gf and Wm., born 1818 my GG gf. My William Cooley had no children until
1841 and the William Cooley during the 1840 census in Randolph County shows
2 males under 5 and one male age 5 to 9; one male 30 to 39 and one female 20
to 29.
According to Jan Martinet's Cooley history, William the son of James (John,
Sr.) was born about 1804 in Ky. He was married about 1825 to Dorothy
Cooley, daughter of John Cooley and Elizabeth White Cooley. She died in
1838. There is a marriage in Randolph County in 1839 for a William Cooley
and Sarah Ballenger. The 1850 census in Macon County for William and Sarah
shows teen agers and younger children. They are living near a Ballenger
family. In 1834 when William Cooley purchased the land next door to John
and Elizabeth White Cooley, this would mean this is John and Elizabeth
Cooley's daughter, Dorothy living next to them, married to William Cooley,
son of James according to Jan Martinet and others on Ancestry.
It is confusing when we have Cooley's married to Cooley's and four of the
White children married to four of the Cooley children. Very near the John
Cooley property and the Wm. Cooley property is Timothy Cooley(James), Thomas
K. White and Jemima Cooley (James) White. Thomas K. White and Elizabeth
White married to John Cooley are siblings. Nicholas Tuttle also has
property connecting to Thomas K. White and Timothy Cooley. After Jane
White's husband, James Cooley died in 1829 she married the son of Nicholas
Tuttle. We still are not certain if that James Cooley is the son of Joseph
or James Cooley. Thomas K. White was the administrator of that estate.
Since Jane White was his sister, no clue in that about the paternity for her
husband, James Cooley, although Jemima Cooley White was the daughter of
James. I am not certain where Jane White and James Cooley lived but later
census show Jane White Cooley Tuttle just inside of Macon County, not far
from College Mound.
If anyone on our list is from the Wm. Cooley, son of James Cooley(John, Sr.)
they may have more info about Dorothy Cooley's death and the second marriage
to Sarah Ballenger.
