I can't help but wonder if this was the son of Alameda/Almide Cheney due to
the death date and the marriage of 1887 of Alameda to William Perrin Murley:

I found yesterday that James Moses Cheney was listed in 1880 as "Single".
Lear/Leah 'Ella' (Noble) Cheney was married to Samuel Shelton according to
the 1880 census. Also listed in 1880 are two of Leah's daughters with
their names listed as Shelton.

I believe Leah 'Ella' Noble is the correct spelling as she is listed in 1850
as Leah Noble.

Found this yesterday also:

Illinois, Marriages, 1851-1900
Name: James Cheney
Gender: Male
Spouse Name: Lear Noble
Marriage Date: 22 Jul 1852
Marriage County: Calhoun
Comments: This record can be found at the County Court Records, Film #

Found this today on Ancestry.com:

James (Theodore) Moses Cheney

Source: Joyce Cheney of Janesville, CA (from Sheryl Rodda) January 18,
2007:

(James M. Cheney is sometime referred to as Theodore Moses Cheney.)

"There were two Cheney brothers who arrived in New York from the North of
Ireland. They may have settled in Illinois for awhile. Theodore Moses
Cheney was a widower with two sons, Bud and Jim Cheney. He married Leah
Noble (either a sister or a daughter of Syrus Noble). She was a doctor. The
had several daughters. In 1854 they started west and stopped for the winter
in St. Louis, where most of the wagon trains were organized.

Peter Malvin Cheney was born there, on the 13th of March in 1855. They
joined a Mormon wagon train it seems and traveled together until they
reached Salt Lake City. There they split up and (name unknown) stayed with
the Mormons.

Theo. headed for California with his family, and when he became ill, Leah
had to take care of him, the children and drive the two oxen.

(This story was told to me by Gramp Peter and my Dad.) They stopped at a
small town for awhile. It was a very bad time for Leah. Her husband was
still ill, the Indians were hungry, no food. They would come begging at the
doors and the town folk, who were afraid of them, would throw boiling water
on them. Leah shared what she could and doctored them. (I assume she was a
Homeopathic.). The town folks ridiculed her, and called her a crazy old
woman, etc. The Indians grew very angry and warned Leah to take her family
and leave as they intended to attack the town. She warned the other people,
but they did not believe her and stayed. While Leah was packign the wagon
to leave, she discovered one of her oxen missing, and started to prepare the
wagon for one oxen. But soon, an Indian arrived with her missing oxen that
had strayed. Later, she heard that the town was raided and burned. (Do not
know the name of the town or the Indians.)"

Joyce added that she remembers her father-in-law telling her that his
"grandmother came to California with a two wheel cart and an Indian she had
helped recover from scalding helped her make it...Leah Noble Cheney had a
place there in Parkfield Valley. It may have been a Homestead. Theodore got
well and left his family. No one ever heard from him again."
