This will uses Cowley and Cooley interchangeably. The other day we learned
that poet Abraham Cowley pronounced his name Cooley. I'd never taken
Cowley seriously as an alternate spelling for our family but there seems
to be something to it. Probably not in the US, but in England. If John was
born a Cowley but pronounced it Cooley, and considering that he was
possibly illiterate, that would explain that the clerks, etc., would spell
it Cooley.

I haven't yet seen documentation that ties this George with his supposed
father, Wm Cowley, in Derbyshire. I half suspect this may not be the right
line. I wish I could find the Anthony Cowley who posted about his descent.
